Termy ("we", "our", "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our desktop applications (macOS and Windows), browser extension, and website.

Information We Collect

Account Information: When you create an account, we collect your email address. Authentication is handled via OAuth (Google, GitHub, or email link) — we do not store passwords.

Selected Text: When you use Termy (via the browser extension or desktop app), the text you select is sent to our servers for vocabulary analysis. This text is processed in real-time and is not stored or logged after processing.

Usage Data: We collect anonymous usage statistics to improve our service, including feature usage frequency, error reports, aggregate website page views, outbound-link clicks, email clicks, and installer download clicks.

Payment Information: Payment processing is handled by our payment provider (Polar). We do not store your credit card information.

Browser Extension

The Termy browser extension:

• Reads text you select on web pages when you trigger an explanation (via keyboard shortcut, context menu, or hotkey)
• Sends the selected text to Termy servers for vocabulary analysis
• Stores authentication tokens, user preferences (language level, display mode), and a local cache of recent explanations in browser local storage
• Communicates with the optional Termy Desktop companion app on localhost for shortcut sync and authentication sync
• Does not track your browsing history, monitor your activity, or access any page content beyond the text you explicitly select

Desktop Application

The Termy desktop application:

• Captures a screenshot of a selected screen region when you press the hotkey
• Sends the screenshot to our AI processing servers for text extraction and vocabulary analysis
• Screenshots are processed in real-time, immediately discarded after processing, and never stored, logged, or used for AI training
• We do not have access to view your screenshots — the processing is fully automated

How We Use Your Information

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including:

• HTTPS encryption for all data transmission
• JWT-based authentication with secure token handling
• Regular security audits

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

• OpenAI / Google AI: For text analysis and vocabulary explanations
• Polar: For payment processing
• Mailgun: For transactional emails
• Simple Analytics: For privacy-friendly aggregate website metrics without cookies or personalized advertising

Selected text and screenshots are sent to AI providers solely for processing your request and are subject to their respective privacy policies. We do not permit these providers to use your data for model training.

Data Retention

• Selected text and screenshots: Not stored — discarded immediately after processing
• Vocabulary cache: Stored locally on your device, clearable at any time
• Account data: Retained until you delete your account
